Located 1 ½ miles west of St. Louis' city limits, Brentwood is a small city that couples a hub of commercial activity with a serene residential setting. Present-day Brentwood dates back to three separate land purchases in the year 1804. However, the town was not truly organized until the arrival of the area's first great resident, Thomas Madden. The settlement became known as Maddenville and quickly became a commercial center after a streetcar line connected it to downtown St. Louis. In 1919, the town of Maddenville became incorporated as the village of Brentwood.
