Creve Coeur was first settled by the French in 1796, placing it among the oldest settlements in Missouri. The town was named after nearby Creve Coeur Lake, legend has it that a Native American princess named Memetonwish dove into the lake after falling in love with a French fur trapper. The lake then changed its shape to that of a broken heart, Creve Coeur in French, and obtained its name. As St. Louis grew, Creve Coeur Lake became a popular destination for the vacationing elite. The lake hosted the rowing competition in the 1904 Olympics. Development continued along the Olive Boulevard corridor, which provides easy transportation to downtown St. Louis.
