A MetroLink stop on Shrewsbury's Lansdowne Avenue provides easy access to Clayton and scenic Forest Park. Shrewsbury offers a central location just on the outskirts of St. Louis' southwest border, a location which makes the community desirable and convenient.
 
In 1890, many land grants given during the War of 1812 were divided into farms and sold to the public. General John Murdoch purchased a 278-acre farm[ southwest of St. Louis and named it Shrewsbury Park, after the town of Shrewsbury, England. Shrewsbury was incorporated as a village in 1913, placing it among the oldest suburban developments in St. Louis County. The development of bus routes in the 1950s, along with the construction of Interstate 44 during the 1960s, allowed Shrewsbury to thrive as a commuter suburb. The construction of these arterials launched Shrewsbury into a preeminent place among St. Louis' residential communities. Shrewsbury's centennial celebration in 2013, accompanied by festivals, parades, and fireworks, celebrated a century of residential comfort in this community just southwest of St. Louis City.

The national CAPS network allows students in the 11th and 12 th grade the opportunity to participate in career-based educational programs. While earning high school and college credit, qualified students spend approximately 2 ½ hours each school day working in fields such as engineering, healthcare, information technology, and global entrepreneurship. For parents seeking faith-based education, St. Michael's Parish in Shrewsbury operates a branch of St. Louis' Holy Cross Academy. Holy Cross is an acclaimed network of faith-based academies organized by the archdiocese of St. Louis. Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, also located in Shrewsbury, was the first seminary established west of the Mississippi River. Its vast Charles L Souvay Memorial Library, filled with periodicals, reference books, and journals, is open to the public.
