Sunset Hills is a relatively young city. While the city was not incorporated until 1957, its history stretches back to the founding family of St. Louis. Gabriel Cerre, the son-in-law of St. Louis founder Auguste Chouteau, started a Sulphur mill in Sunset Hills after receiving a land grant from the Spanish government in 1779. Sunset Hills' location on the banks of the Meramec made the city an ideal location, as water power allowed industry to flourish. With water access also came trade and wealth. Sunset Hills became a prosperous commercial center when St. Louis City was still hard to reach. As transportation technology improved, the city transitioned into a suburban community focused primarily on residential development. Residents working in St. Louis City moved to Sunset Hills for its abundant spaces and scenic vistas. What once was a hub of water-powered industry is now an idyllic suburb.

Sunset Hills is a spacious residential community. The majority of houses in the municipality are detached, single-family homes. In 2023, homes in Sunset Hills sold for a median price of $720,000. Sunset Hills neighborhoods are lauded as much for their beautifully cultivated landscapes as they are for their meticulously constructed homes. These grand houses, situated on properties of substantial size, lend Sunset Hill's winding lanes a stately, continental atmosphere.
